From the Fields to the Frontlines of Community Health: Rebecca Martinez's Journey of Purpose
By Nina A Padilla
Rebecca Martinez's story doesn't begin in a boardroom or a classroom. It begins in the fields. As the child of migrant farm workers, Rebecca spent her early years traveling across the country with her family, working two- to three-month stretches in states like North Dakota, Minnesota, Missouri, and Florida. It was a childhood built on hard work and constant movement, but also on a value her parents never let go of education.
"The only way out of this lifestyle is to get an education," they told her, and they meant it. Even as many families around them pulled their kids from school to help make ends meet, Rebecca's parents worked seasonally so she could stay in class, only pulling her out a couple of weeks each year to help pick apples in Missouri. That commitment carried her all the way through college at St. Mary's University.
Rebecca's path into marketing was anything but planned. While working toward an accounting associate degree at San Antonio College, she took a work-study position she assumed was a student help desk. It turned out to be the school's public relations office. That's where she discovered a talent for writing she'd been told about for years but never quite believed in. Encouraged by professor after professor to keep going, Rebecca transferred to St. Mary's and earned her bachelor's degree in communications, setting her on a path toward public relations.
Her career has since spanned healthcare, tourism, and hospitality, from working alongside vascular surgeons focused on preventive care, to promoting San Antonio through the Convention and Visitors Bureau and Hyatt Hill Country Resort and Spa. But healthcare kept pulling her back. Today, Rebecca serves as Communications Manager at Methodist Healthcare Ministries, working alongside a team of 12 across public relations, marketing, events, internal communications, multimedia, and more.
For Rebecca, MHM isn't just a job. It's a calling. "I have finally found my ministry," she says, describing an organization whose mission of "serving humanity to honor God" mirrors the values she grew up with. It's work that lets her serve the same communities she came from: people who, like her own family once did, may not have easy access to care or resources.
Looking ahead, Rebecca is focused on growth: staying current with the fast-changing communications landscape, including AI and new platforms, and on reconnecting with community involvement through organizations like the Latina Leadership Institute, after stepping back in recent years to focus on work.
From the fields to the frontlines of healthcare communications, Rebecca Martinez's story is one of faith, family, and an unwavering belief in the power of education and service. AMA San Antonio is proud to celebrate her this month.
